There's been a ton of gossip about why Altman was previously ousted. Some thought it was about disagreements over an AI project, Q*, but former board member Helen Toner clarified on X that it wasn’t about AI safety.

The biggest question is: What will happen to Ilya Sutskever? The Chief Scientist of OpenAI was on the board that fired Altman. But then, plot twist, Ilya changed his mind when the staff almost revolted to get Altman back.

Altman wrote that he has no hard feelings towards Ilya, and they are discussing how he can continue his work at OpenAI. However, it's clear that Sutskever won't be rejoining the board.

Meanwhile, Microsoft's stepping in, kind of like a silent partner. They will be on the board, but as a non-voting observer. After Altman's surprise exit, Microsoft's big boss, Satya Nadella, was like, 'No more surprises, please.'
